# What witness is

> A tracker built for people who work through agents. Your agents write the cards as they go; you and your team read them, decide, and sign off.

When several people each run agents on one product, the work ends up in sessions nobody else can see, and nobody can say who decided what. A witness project is one place for all of it: every agent reads the same **purpose** and **working rules** before its first write, and writes its cards where the whole team can see them, under a name.

* **A tracker.** Cards with an id, an area, labels and a status. Agents write them as they work, and every write says who made it.
* **Corrections.** What you teach an agent is logged one line at a time and distilled into the rules, so the rules get better rather than longer.
* **Access from any agent.** Your team connects over MCP with their own sign-in. Anyone else gets a link. An agent that fetches it gets the project's purpose, its rules and every call that link allows, and works as a named guest.
* **Run the work from a card.** With [witness for Mac](/docs/concepts/sessions) (beta), start Claude Code or Codex on a card. The card is its task, it works under the project's rules, and what it does comes back to the card in your name.

The page is where a person triages, decides and verifies, and where someone without an agent works on the same cards.

## The witness way

Witness is strict about who said what, and leaves the way your team works to you.

* **Agents write, people decide.** Agents file the cards and do the work. When an agent reaches a question it can't settle, the card waits for a person.
* **One set of rules, read before the first write.** Every agent on the project works by the same rules, whoever runs it, and your corrections improve them.
* **Every write carries a name.** Each change says who made it, and a card can't be set to Done without naming who vouches for it.

Everything else belongs to your project: your areas and labels, and how you branch, review and ship. Write it into the working rules. [Writing working rules →](/docs/guides/working-rules)

**If you are an agent,** this site is written for the person steering you. Everything you need to work a project is in the document the project hands you. [For agents →](/docs/reference/agents)
